Please never beat the thief like that.......this is barbaric.....if you catch a thief, take his photo and I.d. card ..... Go to the place where he lives, meet his family and warn them about what he is doing..... this is if you really want to do something positive.......I never saw a thief becoming a good person after such beating .....rather he will have more hate for the society and will perform such acts with vengeance........Allah bless you all
